Description
The Basset Hound is a short-legged dog, heavier in bone, size considered, than any other breed of dog. Its movement is humorous looking and slow, but not clumsy. The Basset Hound is essentially a hunting dog with strong natural instincts and will power. It makes a good family companion. The Basset Hound is a lovely and amusing household pet, it’s loyal and obedient to its owner. In temperament it is mild, never sharp or timid. It’s a good-natured dog breed; it gets along well with other pets and children. It is capable of great endurance in the field and is extreme in its devotion.

Temperament:
The Basset Hound is sweet, gentle, devoted, peaceful and naturally well behaved. It perfectly fits into family life. It’s always friendly with never an indication of sharpness or viciousness. It is incapable of biting, but it may be a bit stubborn. The Basset Hound likes to do tricks for food. It has a deep musical bark. With proper training, it is obedient, but when it picks up an interesting smell, it's sometimes hard to get its attention.

Black, white and tan, but could be lemon colored. Any recognized hound color is acceptable.
Coat:
Basset Hound has short, hard and shiny coat. The coat is hard, smooth with sufficient density to be of use in all weather. It requires minimal brushing. The skin is loose and elastic.

Health Issues:
The Basset Hound is susceptible to ear and skin infections and obesity. Do not overfeed these dogs because extra weight places too great a load on the legs and spine. As it is prone to bloat, it is wise to feed the dog two or three small meals a day instead of one big large meal. The dog should be kept observed for several hours after eating a large meal.
Living Environment:
The Basset hound will do okay in an apartment. It is very sedentary indoors but outdoors it will run for hours in play if given the chance. It will do okay without a yard, but should be given plenty of opportunities to run and play to keep it healthy and trim. It needs daily exercise to prevent obesity.
