The Beagle has a charming, upbeat personality, admirable courage and stamina. It makes an excellent family pet, it is great with children and eager to romp and play. Beagles are scent hounds, developed primarily for tracking hare, rabbit, and other game. They have a keen sense of smell and tracking instinct that sees them employed as detection dogs for prohibited agricultural imports and foodstuffs in quarantine around the world.

Beagle may be a combination of the hound colors: white, black, tan, red, lemon and blue mottle.

The Beagle has a short, hard, dense, and weatherproof coat. It is minimal shedder.

The Beagle is sociable, brave, intelligent, calm and loving. It's a sweet, gentle, lively and curious dog that just loves everyone. It's a happy little tail-wagger! The Beagle is one of the most popular scent hounds because of its energy, willingness, and merry, sweet disposition.

It's excellent with children and good with other dogs, but should not be trusted with non-canine pets, unless it is socialized with cats and other household animals. The Beagle is determined and watchful. It requires patient and firm training. This breed doesn't like being left alone. The Beagle tends to follow its nose wherever it goes and was bred for the hunt - which means baying, howling and barking. Beagle has a loud baying cry that can be disturbing to family and neighbors.

The Beagle needs companionship and daily exercise preferably in a fenced yard. The Beagle will do okay in an apartment if it gets plenty of chances to be outdoors. This dog breed needs plenty of exercise, a yard of reasonable size will take care of most of its requirements.
