Description
The word "boerboel" derives from "boer" word for "farmer". Boerboel thus translates as either "farmer's dog" or "Boer's dog" in Afrikaans. The Boerboel is a perfectly balanced dog with all body parts being in proportion with one another. The head is short, broad, deep, square, is muscular and has well-filled cheeks. The body is extremely muscular, stocky and compact. The skin is thick, loose and well pigmented with moderate wrinkles on the brow when the dog is attentive. This breed was – and is - kept as watchdogs, as friends, as playmates to children, and as protectors of families. The Boerboel does not retreat from any form of danger. It was originally bred as a watchdog, to look after the homesteads in South Africa.

History:
The Boerboel was bred from two main sources of genetic material: - The Bullenbijter from Europe that Jan van Riebeck brought with him from Europe to South Africa in 1652 during the colonization of South Africa. This dog had early roots in Albania and Syria. - The African dog of the black tribes of Africa and mostly the large dogs from Ethiopia The true Bull Mastiff that was used to breed the Boerboel, was only imported to South Africa in 1928, by De Beers, to be guard dogs on the diamond mines. After the Anglo-Boer War in 1902, these various dog breeds were crossbred with the English long-legged Bulldog, and subsequently also with the Bull Mastiff in the late 1940's and early 1950's. Crossbreeding these large dogs of the colonists' with the dogs (mongrels) of the black inhabitants of Africa occurred. This is how the Boerboel, as found on countless farms and which later trekked north with the Great Trek, originated.
