Description
The Jack Russell Terrier is a small, compact agile, brave terrier, who is good at hunting small animals like foxes and raccoons. Like other terriers they may bore easily and are capable of inventing their own entertainment. Jack Russell Terriers are a tough little dog who is clean and a convenient size for a companion. These friendly dogs are bold, athletic and clever. They are game hunters, tenacious and courageous at work, and at home they are playful, exuberant and overwhelmingly affectionate. This breed is an independent and energetic terrier and requires their due portion of attention.

There are several Jack Russell Terrier clubs which have each set up slightly different breed standards and registries.
FCI, ANKC, IKC, recognize the shorts as Jack Russell Terriers and the UKC recognized the shorts as Russell Terriers. The Parsons are the long legged Jack Russell Terriers named officially Parsons Russell Terriers. The Jack Russell Terrier and the Russell Terrier are the same breed but are entirely a separate breed from the Parsons Russell Terrier.
The Jack Russell Terrier Club of America, founded in 1976, and the Jack Russell Terrier Breeder's Association register only those individual dogs which meet their standards. Only a dog without hereditary defects may be registered. The AKC has recently recognized the Jack Russell Terrier as the Parson Russell Terrier. Jack Russell's may also be registered with the UKC, KCGB, NKC, CKC, NZKC, CET, ANKC, FCI, IKC. The Irish Kennel Club has recognized the Jack Russell Terrier in Ireland adopting the FCI standard for the breed.

Temperament:
The Jack Russell Terrier is a perky, happy, loyal, and loving dog.  It is a friendly dog and generally kind to children who have been taught not to tease or strike the dog.  Spirited and obedient, yet absolutely fearless.  Careful and amusing, enjoying games and playing with toys.  This breed is intelligent, yet willful and determined.  They need a firm, experienced trainer.  These dogs can be aggressive with other dogs if not well trained and socialized. They have strong hunting instincts (stronger than your average terrier) and should not be trusted with other small animals. They like to bark and dig.  This is breed is not the breed for a inexperienced dog owner. This is a big dog in a little dog’s body. The owner needs to be as strong-willed as they are, or this little guy will take over.  With the right owner this little dog can really excel, but is not recommended for those who have not had prior experience with terriers.  
Colors:
White with black, tan or lemon or solid white.
Coat:
They have a smooth or rough and broken coat. All coat types are easy to groom. Comb and brush regularly with a firm bristle brush, and bathe only when necessary. To show, owners must strip the coat. Like the rough coat, the broken coated Jack needs to be stripped out also.

Health Issues:
Some are prone to dislocation of the kneecaps, inherited eye diseases, deafness, Legg Perthes-a disease of the hip joints of small breeds of dogs.
Living Environment:
The Jack Russell Terrier will do okay in an apartment if it is sufficiently exercised. They are very active indoors and will do best with at least an average-sized yard. If they are kept in an apartment, the dog should have a person home with it during the day unless the dog is crate trained. Even then, the owner better expect to get some exercise or be pestered to death for belly rubs and tug of war games when he/she gets home.
