Perro de Agua Francés

The Barbet, the ‘water dog of France’ is a rare breed. Though hard to find, it is around 1000 years since they were first bred as a waterfowl retriever in France. The name comes from the French word ‘barbe’ which means ‘beard’, one of their most distinctive features.

Their size is roughly 58-65cm for a male and 53-61cm for females. This breed typically weighs in at 17-28kg.

As mentioned before this breed loves water, and is happy to play at the beach and at the lake. They are very much a sporting dog, and like to have things to do, and to learn.

They are very much on the higher end for exercise requirements. This makes them more suited to experienced dog owners. However they are calmer indoors.

Abrigo

pelaje del Perro de Agua Francés

This breed is a low shedder like the Poodle – in fact close to being hypoallergenic. So it is a better choice for an allergy sufferer. They do however have a thick coat that can tangle – so regular grooming is vital. A daily brush is ideal.

Problemas de Saluds

Problemas de Salud

The Barbet is a generally very healthy dog when from good breeding. They can occasionally suffer from hip issues and allergies.

Condiciones de Vida

A Barbet will do okay in an apartment as long as it is taken for regular and long walks, since it has a lot of energy. It was bred to be a working dog and it is not a lazy breed. It can get active indoors, but a small yard is also acceptable. This is not a breed to be left alone for long periods of time, indoors or out, since it needs human companionship.
