The Fila Brasileiro is a native breed of Brazil, used to guard flocks and property, it is best known as a fierce guard dog. This is a courageous, massive, powerful breed. It is well boned with a rectangular structure. It is known for its outstanding courage and bravery, it is obedient to its owner but is an unsurpassed guardian of its property.

The Fila is amenable with its human family, making a very loyal loving companion; extremely dedicated to its owner. It is the breed’s nature to be loyal and protective of its family. The Fila makes a wonderful guard dog.

Outstanding courage, determination, and bravery are part of the Fila’s characteristics. It is docile and obedient to its owners and family and extremely tolerant with children in its own family. Its faithfulness became a Brazilian proverb. Fila Brasileiros make great family pets; they are always looking for the company of their masters.

It is gentle, loving, loyal and very protective. You don’t have to teach your Fila to protect you, as it does this on its own, it will protect you without hesitation. It is bold and very wary with strangers. At anywhere from 2 – 5 months of age you will notice that your Fila does not like strangers; this is bred into it.

The dog will only make up to people that it feels you trust. You cannot socialize a Fila to like people, you can obedience train it so that you are in control, but you cannot socialize it to like people. A Fila will attack a stranger, if has the proper temperament. This trait of the Fila is called “Ojeriza” translates to “Hatred and loathing of strangers”.

If you socialize your Fila at an early age by taking it around strangers it will be easier to handle it when strangers are present. If you choose not to socialize the dog you must be aware that no longer will the next door neighbor be able to just walk right in. It is an unsurpassed guardian of property; it is also inclined, by instinct, to hunt big game and to herd cattle. The Fila is NOT a breed for the average pet owner. It may drool, especially after getting a drink.

This breed may be any color, solid or brindle, except white, mouse gray, patched dogs, dappled, or black and tan. The typical colors are fawn, black and brindle.

The smooth, short-haired, dense coat is easy to groom. Brush with a firm bristle brush and wipe over with a piece of toweling or chamois for a gleaming finish. Bathe or dry shampoo when necessary. This breed is an average shedder.

Beware of hip dysplasia. To help prevent the chance of hip or elbow dysplasia developing make sure your dog is on a healthy, well proportioned diet, and avoid excessive running and jumping while still a puppy as this can be hard on the developing joints. Be aware that due to their size they have an increased chance of bloat, leading to a twisted stomach, feed two or three small meals a day, instead of one large one. It is also prone to CHD, gastric torsion, elbow dysplasia and PRA. To minimize the risk of your Fila developing any hereditary health issues, you should buy a Fila puppy from a reputable Fila Brasileiro breeder.

Condiciones de Vida

Filas are not suited to city life. A Fila needs a fenced yard and plenty of exercise. The Fila can sleep outdoors with proper shelter. It loves walks, but also can be very lazy. Some can even be big couch potatoes, so ensure that regular exercise is given.
