The Catahoula Leopard, otherwise known as Louisiana Catahoula, originated in the territory of Louisiana, USA. They were bred to be a stock dog, bay dog, tree dog, companion dog, watch dog and guard dog.
The Louisiana Catahoula is a medium to medium-large dog, well-muscled, yet trim. It is powerfully built, but also has good agility and great endurance. Many Catahoulas are famous for their colourful, distinctive merle coats. They have long legs, and large, floppy ears.
Temperamento
The Catahoula is an independent, protective, and territorial working breed. This versatile dog can be trained for almost any purpose, from hunting to working stock. Basically, the dog wants to please its owner. This, being its natural instincts, makes training a matter of getting the pup’s attention, then teaching it basic obedience.
Catahoulas develop their own style of working – it is bred in them. They work on both sight and sound and are excellent field trial dogs. A kind word and a pat on the head will be reward enough for the Catahoula to try its best for its owner.
Colores
The Catahoula can come in a wide range of colors. They include, Black, Blue, Blue Merle, Brindle, Chocolate, Red, Red Merle, Yellow, Yellow Merle and White.
Abrigo
Their coat is short and smooth. They require weekly brushing and are a moderate shedder, neither excessive or very light.
Problemas de Salud
This is a generally healthy breed, with few common health concerns. Like with most larger breeds, hip dysplasia can occur. Deafness is slightly more common than in other breeds.
