The Maltipoo is a cross breed; a combination of the Maltese and the Miniature or Toy Poodle. Their size can vary from 8 – 15 inches tall, depending on the dominance of the breed mix. The average weight is 5 – 20 pounds. When a Maltese is mixed with a Toy Poodle they will always be on the smaller and lighter side.
The Maltipoo usually has a moderately compact body, with floppy ears. Their coat is medium to long in length, and wavy or slightly curly. As you would expect from a cross breed, their look can vary, and some Maltipoos will appear more graceful and long limbed like a Poodle. While others will have a more solid conformation, with a face like a Maltese.
The Maltipoo is a very friendly, happy, warm natured breed. They bond closely with their owners, and are very people centric. They are also very good with kids, and have a playful nature. Known to be barkers when excited, Maltipoos are nevertheless generally very gentle. This breed is also good as companions for older people, as their evergy needs are moderate.
The Maltipoo, thanks to its Poodle inheritance is a smart breed, very capable, and ready to listen. This makes them a fairly easy breed to train. With their easy going nature, and lower care needs, this is a good breed for a first time dog owner.
A Maltipoo coat depends on the coloring of the parents. While a Maltese is typically white, colors for the Maltipoo are wide ranging. This is because the Poodle comes in 10 or more colors. However by far the most common Malitpoo colors are white, cream and apricot.
The Maltipoo coat is fluffy, and wool-like in nature, and very soft to the touch. It can range anywhere from slightly wavey, to very curly. This is a very low shedding breed, with low dander levels, making them eminently suitable for allergy sufferers.
The Maltipoo is a generally healthy breed, but it can occasionally suffer from similar issues that the Maltese and Poodle are prone to. These include Patellar luxation, Epilepsy, Cataracts and Progressive Retinal Atrophy. To minimize the risk of your Maltipoo developing any hereditary health issues, you should buy a Maltipoo puppy from a reputable Maltese breeder.
The Maltipoo is well suited to any home, whether a house with a garden, or an apartment. What is important to them is to be close to their family. This is not a breed that is suited to sleeping outside.
