The Bernese Mountain Dog is a striking, tri-colored, sturdy, large dog. Hi is a friend for life.
He is intelligent, strong and agile enough to do the draft and droving work for which he was used in the mountainous regions of his origin.
Dogs appear masculine, while bitches are distinctly feminine.

The BMD is very social and extremely loyal to its family. The Bernese Mountain Dog is eager to please and easy to train. This dog breed is a sweet character in nature, outgoing, affectionate who loves children.
Berners are one-owner dogs and may find it difficult to adjust to a new owner if introduced after 18 months of age. They are generally good with other pets and dogs. These dogs may be slow to mature and remain puppy like for a while. They are very intelligent, easy to train and are natural watchdogs, but not aggressive.

The beautiful weather-resistant tri-color double coat is jet black with symmetrical markings of rust and white. The dog should have a white blaze on the chest, white on the head and toes, and rust markings over each eye, on the cheeks, sides of the chest, under the tail and on each leg.

The coat is moderately long and either straight or slightly wavy. Seasonal, heavy shedder and requires daily brushing.

This being a big, strong breed hip and elbow dysplasia can be fairly common. A blood disorder called Von Willebrand’s disease is a moderate issue, please be on the look out for any blood in the urine, gums, or any nosebleeds. They have also a greater than average chance of suffering from a twisted stomach. To help prevent the chance of hip or elbow dysplasia developing make sure your dog is on a healthy, well proportioned diet, and avoid excessive running and jumping while still a puppy as this can be hard on the developing joints. To minimize the risk of your Bernese developing any of these hereditary health issues, you should buy a Bernese dog from a reputable Bernese Mountain Dog breeder.

It is not an understatement to say that the Bernese Mountain Dog is not particularly suitable for apartments. They are a large breed and it requires a large spacious yard. They are thick coated and better suited to be in a cooler climate. They need plenty of exercise, this breed is too big and strong to allow to become bored. But they also enjoy lounging with their owner.
