The Affenpinscher, also known as the Monkey Terrier, is a small, but famously furry breed. ‘Affe’ means monkey in German, and they are given that name for their monkey-like expressions. They weigh between 6 and 13 pounds, and stand around 9 – 12 inches high.
Their coat is rough and wirey in texture, and is shaggier around the head, giving them a lion-like mane. The coat is softer and fluffier when clippered. Their tail was commonly docked, but this is much rarer now.
Temperamento
The Affenpinscher is famous for their fun, confident and cheeky nature; similar to many terriers, though they are actually related to the Schnauzer. They are very adventurous, clever, and like to play. This is a breed that is good with children.
They are affectionate and loyal with family members, and like to be around people. The Affenpinscher can also be quite protective of its family. This breed does have a stubborn streak, and early, consistent training is important.
Colores
In Europe and the UK only black is accepted. But the AKC also accepts grey, silver, red, black and tan; as well as belge (a mixture of these AKC colors).
Abrigo
The Affenpinscher has a fairly thick and rough coat. It has a harder texture. The length is roughly 1 inch on the body, but longer and shaggier on the face.
Problemas de Salud
As with other smaller breeds, luxating patellas can be an issue. Eye problems are also moderately frequent with this breed. Hip dysplasia is a rarer, but possible, concern. To minimize the risk of your Affenpinscher developing any hereditary health issues, you should buy an Affenpinscher dog from a reputable breeder.
