The Belgian Malinois or Belgian Shepherd Dog is a very intelligent, lively breed excelling in an active family environment, but also is a wonderful working dog whether in obedience, herding, agility or tracking. The Belgian Malinois is a no-nonsense dog who must be taken seriously by their owner.
It is recommended an owner be an experience dog person. They are well balanced medium size dogs, elegant in appearance. They are the picture of power and grace.
The Belgian Malinois is one of four Belgian Sheepdogs. It is a very smart and obedient dog, serious and watchful with strong protective and territorial instincts. Some are very shy or sensitive. This breed needs extensive socialization from an early age, and firm, but not harsh, training from an experienced master.
If you are harsh or overbearing they will become uncooperative. Breeders should socialize puppies right from birth. They are good for working and competition obedience, make excellent police and guard dogs. They do however, make excellent pets. They are ever-watchful, alert and loyal, and they thrive on loving companionship.
This breed is good with children if socialized well with them and needs to be part of the family and NOT locked up in a kennel. They have a lot of energy and needs a job to do. Generally this dog gets along well with children, but they can be rather dominant toward other dogs. Provided they are correctly socialized with cats and other pets, they should not present any problems. This is a very demanding dog, needs an experienced owner.
All shades of red, fawn, gray, with black overlap.
They have long, straight and abundant coat. The smooth, short-haired coat is easy to groom. Brush regularly with a firm bristle brush and bathe only if it is absolutely necessary, as bathing removes the waterproofing of the coat. They are light constant shedder, but shed heavily twice a year.
This is a hardy, healthy breed, having no major health concerns. A minor concern is cataracts and occasionally hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia. To help prevent the chance of hip or elbow dysplasia developing make sure your dog is on a healthy, well proportioned diet, and avoid excessive running and jumping while still a puppy as this can be hard on the developing joints. To minimize the risk of your Belgian Malinois developing any hereditary health issues, you should buy a Belgian Malinois puppy from a reputable breeder.
The Belgian Malinois will do okay in an apartment if it is sufficiently exercised. It is moderately active indoors and will do best with at least an average-sized yard. They prefer cool climates, but adapt well to others. They can live outdoors but would much rather be with his/her people. Best suited for country living, but if not a home with a fenced yard is essential.
