Central Asian Ovcharka Breed Description
The Central Asian Ovcharka also known as the Central Asian Shepherd Dog, is a very large, muscular, powerful, Mastiff type dog.
It’s a loyal and fearless dog with the ability to protect flock and family. It is a calm, independent dog breed. It makes a good family pet. This is not a breed for the timid owner; it needs firm obedience training.
Temperament
The Central Asian Ovcharka is good with all members of their own family; however, it should be supervised with children.
Early socialization is a must for Central Asians. Outside the home it may try to dominate other dogs and is wary of strangers; it is a guardian and will act as such.
It gets along with cats and other non-canine animals and other dogs, as long as the dog is not a threat to their charge. It likes to bark at night and this may present a problem if you have close neighbors.
This dog breed lived its life with the Family of Turkmen thus it is a family dog that wants and seeks interaction with daily life. This flock guardian is not for everyone; it needs an owner who understands the flock guard type and the temperament that comes along with it.
Colors
White, black, black and white, brindle, red, gray, straw, tri-colored, black and tan.
Coat
Two coat lengths; short and medium length, well developed undercoats.
Health Issues
Hip and elbow dysplasia can be an issue due to their size. To help prevent the chance of hip or elbow dysplasia developing make sure your dog is on a healthy, well proportioned diet, and avoid excessive running and jumping while still a puppy as this can be hard on the developing joints. Be aware that due to their size they have an increased chance of bloat, leading to a twisted stomach. Living Environment
The Central Asian Ovcharka requires a large yard, the larger the better, with a fence. Small living conditions can lead to boredom and thus digging and chewing will be a problem. Even with lots of exercise this dog likes to be outdoors watching over its territory. It must have a securely fenced yard or it will expand its territory as far as it can.
