Lagotto Romagnolo Breed Description
The Lagotto Romagnolo is an Italian dog, originating from a marshland area, and is the ultimate water dog. Traditionally a gun dog and water retriever, this breed is now regularly used to hunt for truffles. Not a common breed, it is proving popular as a loyal family guardian.
This is a medium sized breed, and is more sturdy and strong than its elegant looks suggest. Its most famous feature is its woolly curls that cover the body completely. It also has a lush beard, eyebrows and whiskers.
Temperament
The Lagotto is a lively, agile, athletic dog. It needs lots of exercise, activity and interaction. This is a very smart breed that loves to learn, is good at training and can get bored easily. They are good for active families, and must have regular walks and activities.
They are a classic companion dog, being very faithful. However they tend not to be overly affectionate. Nevertheless they are very loyal with the family, and good with kids too. It is happiest by peoples side, and if exercised properly is a very laid back, even tempered dog.
Colors
There are a wide range of colours including solid off-white, white with brown or orange markings, orange roan, brown roan, brown (in many shades), pure orange, brown with white patches, orange with white patches.
Coat
Its curly, woolly coat is very low shedding, and almost hypoallergenic, making it a good choice for allergy sufferers.
Health Issues
Happily this is quite a healthy and long lived breed; often reaching 14-17 years of age. Potential, but not common, conditions include hip dysplasia, cataracts and knee problems.
Living Environment
The Lagotto is adaptable to most climates. It is not an ideal apartment dog and is much better suited to having a yard. If kept in apartments it needs lots of exercise.
