There are two types of Rottweilers, German and American. The difference between two types is the German dogs are breed to work or have the drive to do so. The American dogs are not breed for these characteristics.

Be aware that due to their size they have an increased chance of bloat, leading to a twisted stomach, feed two or three small meals a day, instead of one large one. Parvo virus, hip and elbow dysplasia can be minor risks. To help prevent the chance of hip or elbow dysplasia developing make sure your dog is on a healthy, well proportioned diet, and avoid excessive running and jumping while still a puppy as this can be hard on the developing joints. Rotweilers need frequent exercise and daily mental challenges. A home with a fenced yard is essential. They do fine in a kennel, but should not be left alone all day long in the yard. They can be very territorial and suspicious of strangers, keep inside, do not tie up for long periods of time to avoid frustration of the dog due to lack of movement, a fenced yard fine but do not leave outside unattended for long periods of time. The dog may become overly territorial or aggressive towards people entering the yard.
