Borzoi dog

The Borzois, also called Russian Wolfhounds are gentle, well-mannered dogs who have grace and beauty, yet they enjoy having fun and racing games, such as lure coursing. They are large, aristocratic dog with a long, thin, narrow head, whose body is designed to run fast and chase. It is a highly affectionate dog breed, attached to the owners and tolerant of other dogs.

As puppies, the Borzois grow rapidly and should not be overworked until fully mature – which is at one year of age. Their colors are white, golden, tan, or gray with black markings, in either solid or mixed colors.

Temperament

Borzoi dog

The Borzoi is one of the intelligent dog breeds. They are great as family dogs because of their natural sweetness of character, affection, and loyalty. Training can make them obedient, but since they are hounds, they are more free-thinking and less willing to please humans than some breeds. The training of this breed has to be based upon mutual respect.

The Borzoi is often quite cat-like, keeping themselves quite clean. This breed is quiet, rarely barking. However, because of their urge and love for running, they cannot be trusted off-leash, unless in a securely fenced area.

They are great with other dogs but should be supervised with smaller non-canine pets, such as cats and rabbits. Spending time outdoors with small animals is not advised. They can be good with cats and other pets if socialized at as young an age as possible, but remember that the Borzoi breed will always be a hunter that may race after a fleeing animal.

The Borzoi is a noble dog that gets along fairly well with children, but it is not ideally suited for being a child’s companion as it does not take well to rough-housing play and prizes its rest. During the growing stage, these dogs need a highly nutritional diet.

Coat

Borzoi coat

Silky, flat, and wavy or rather curly; never woolly. The long silky coat is easy to groom. Brush regularly with a firm bristle brush, and dry shampoo when necessary. Bathing presents a problem with such a tall dog but shouldn’t be required very often. Clip the hair between the toes to keep the feet comfortable and to stop them from spreading. The Borzoi is a seasonally heavy shedder.

Health Issues

Due to being deep chested this breed is more prone than others to bloat. It is best to feed the Borzoi small meals two or three times a day. Avoid exercise after meals.

To minimize the risk of your Borzoi developing any hereditary health issues, you should buy a Borzoi puppy from a reputable breeder.

Living Environment

Living Environment

An apartment is suitable for the Borzoi to stay generally healthy and happy, provided they have daily exercise. They are relatively inactive indoors and are so peaceful that they might escape notice, but outside they need plenty of space to walk and run – so it would be best to have at least an average-sized yard. In the city, it should only be let off the lead in a safe, enclosed space. The Borzoi should not be left alone in a yard as they can easily jump a six-foot fence.
