The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is a very muscular, stocky, yet agile dog. It is extremely strong for its size. It has a broad, powerful head, short muzzle, and very strong jaws. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is powerful, reliable, and very protective. With its own family it is devoted, gentle and loving.

Training can be a challenge because of its pushy yet sensitive character. Its natural temperament towards people is gentle and loving, unfortunately some have been improperly handled giving the Staffordshire Bull Terrier a bad rap. It should never be confused with the Pit Bull Terrier. Classed by AKC as ” Staffordshire Terrier” and by UKC as “Pit Bull Terrier.” The Staffordshire Bull Terrier, is generally of larger bone structure, head size and weight then its cousin the Pit Bull Terrier.

This is not a dog for a timid owner; it needs a firm, consistent, but gentle hand. This breed is an intelligent, excellent watchdog and guard dog that is very full of life.

This breed has a very high tolerance for pain. The Staffordshire Terrier must have plenty of regular exercise. This is not a breed for placate or overbearing personalities.

Smooth, short and dense. It is easy to groom. Brush on a regular basis with a firm bristle brush, and bathe or dry shampoo as necessary. A rub with a piece of toweling or chamois will make the coat gleam. This breed is an average shedder.

Generally a very healthy breed. Some are prone to hip dysplasia and hereditary cataracts. To help prevent the chance of hip or elbow dysplasia developing make sure your dog is on a healthy, well proportioned diet, and avoid excessive running and jumping while still a puppy as this can be hard on the developing joints. Prone to hives caused by stress or insect bites.

Living Environment

Staffordshire Terriers will do okay in an apartment if it is sufficiently exercised. It is very active indoors and will do okay without a yard. It does best with a fenced yard. Adapts well to both urban and country living.
