Bucovina Sheepdog, Southeastern European Shepherd
The Bucovina Shepherd is one of the largest livestock guardians, and is rare, being very uncommon outside Romania. They are famed for their massive head, strong jaws and muscular body. Despite being powerfully built they have a reasonably slender frame compared to their head.
They range from 25 – 31 inches in height, and 50 – 90 kgs in weight. They have a straight, thick and hard coat, with a thicker, lion like mane around their neck. This breed also has a bushy tail.
Temperament
The Bucovina Shepherd was breed for guarding, and are naturally a superb guard dog. They are alert, territorial and faithful. While wary of strangers, this breed bonds well with their family, and with good socialization is fine with kids.
This breed can be stubborn; combined with their size, this makes them less suitable for a first time dog owner. It is a dominant breed with other dogs, and must mix with them when young to learn.
Colors
Coat
As a mountain breed it is unsurprising that they have a thick, double coat. Their straight and reasonably hard coat is quite heavy shedding and needs at least weekly brushing.
Health Issues
They do not suffer from many common ailments, but hip dysplasia may be an occasional issue. To minimize the risk of your Bucovina Shepherd developing any hereditary health issues, you should buy a Bucovina Shepherd puppy from a reputable breeder.
