The Labradoodle has boomed dramatically in popularity in recent years. A cross between a Labrador and a Poodle, they can come in a range of sizes, from miniature to medium sized. They also appear in a range of coat types, and most are considered reasonably hypoallergenic, one of the originally reasons for this dogs creation.

The Labradoodle has the friendliness of both original breeds, and is a happy and lively dog. They also have the high intelligence and low shedding coat of the Poodle, alongside the gentleness and trainability of the Labrador.

The Labradoodle is extremely friendly, loyal, gentle and kind. They were purposeful breed not to be aggressive, and are very loving and playful with their family and children. They need plenty of attention and companionship, otherwise they can become bored.

This is a very active and lively dog. The larger, standard variety especially need a lot of daily exercise, including walks, running and playing. But even the miniature versions would require up to 2 hours of exercise a day. Just like the Labrador, they usually love to swim too.

The Labradoodle is an intelligent dog, and usually adapts well to training. The bigger varieties can be strong, big dogs, so early obedience and leash training is a must.

There friendly and loving nature has ensured they make outstanding therapy and service dogs. However they are not ideally suited as watchdogs or guard dogs.

They come in a whole range of colours including gold, apricot, chalk, brown, black, red, cream, and white with any colour markings.

Coat

One of the highlights of the breed, as they tend to be virtually non shedding. They come in three main coat varieties. The Wool coat, which is dense and similar to a sheep’s wool, and hangs in loose curls and is usually non shedding. The Fleece coat with a silky texture, and can be straight or wavy. Or the hair coat, which is the least common, as it sheds. The desired length is 4 to 6 inches.

Prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, also PRA and eye disorders, regular eye checks are recommended. To help prevent the chance of hip or elbow dysplasia developing make sure your dog is on a healthy, well proportioned diet, and avoid excessive running and jumping while still a puppy as this can be hard on the developing joints. To minimize the risk of your Labradoodle developing any hereditary health issues, you should buy a Labradoodle puppy from a reputable Labradoodle breeder.

Living Environment

While the miniature Labradoodle is usually quite comfortable living in an apartment, provided they get sufficient daily exercise, larger, standard Labradoodle would be better suited to having a yard in which they can run around.
